Protecting Our Earth Starts with You

22 Apr, 2021

This year, the EARTHDAY.ORG theme for Earth Day 2021 is ‘Restore Our Earth’. Restore Our Earth reminds us of the opportunity that lay ahead, despite the climate change and coronavirus that affect us. EARTHDAY.ORG stated we must #RestoreOurEarth not just because we care about nature, but because we live on it. A healthy planet is not an option – it is a necessity.

On April 22, Earth Day marks the anniversary of the birth of the modern environmental movement started in 1970. Earth Day 1970 was first initiated in the United States to provide a voice to the emerging environmental consciousness, and putting environmental concerns on the front page. As part of history, Earth Day went global in 1990, mobilizing 200 million people in 141 countries and lifting environmental issues onto the world stage.

Tl;dr;

Earth Day is an annual event that is held on April 22. With the theme “Restore Our Earth”, this movement wants to amplify the emergency of environmental issues and put it as a concern to solve globally from all the parties. In 2021, there are three activity plans started from April 20 with Earth Uprising, April 21 with Education International, and April 22 with the peak of the event.

But basically, all of you can involve on this day to save our environment by doing several activities from everywhere around the world. Your small action may help a lot to our Earth.

How You Can Do to Protect Our Planet

Apply the 8Rs of Sustainability

REDUCE consumption of energy and materials. REUSE, share with others, and find new uses for old objects. RECYCLE, close the loop and, remake. RETHINK, be mindful of your consumption and your relationship with the Earth. REFUSE, don’t consume what you don’t need to. REPAIR, fix or upgrade your objects rather than throwing them away. RECOVER energy and materials recovery and upcycle. REGIFT, share and be a part of the gifted community.

Be Informed

The more you know the better. Prepare yourself on the facts, stay up to date with the latest news on the state of the natural world and work out what you can do. The easiest way to be informed right now is at our fingertips, so learn from influential people, keep up with the news and research organizations that are working to make our place a better place.

Choose Sustainable

The majority of your daily life contributes to global greenhouse gas emissions and is responsible for global biodiversity loss. You should be responsible for what you buy, what you eat, what you do to commute, and what you throw away.

Volunteer for Your World

Volunteer for cleanups in your community and get involved in natural activities as well. Often local nature reserves or parks are looking for regular volunteers, which can give you practical conservation experience as well as helping to restore nature in your local area.

Plant a Tree

Trees provide food and oxygen which can help save energy, clean the air, and help combat climate change. So, plant and take care of trees to slow down global warming and save our Earth. This is not only for you right now, but also for the future generation.

Utilize Technology to Save the Environment

Technology makes our lives easier and faster. It’s also helping us live greener and live better to save the environment. Since everything is digitalized, having a utility like a website or mobile app can save lots of paper. Moreover, technology like smart home devices can also save energy because they are able to shut off power to devices that aren’t in use. With technology, you can save energy, conserve resources, eliminate waste, and make yourself healthier.
